About That Kevin Bird

That Kevin Bird I have been working in oil pastels and focused on housing and landscape architecture for decades. I use housing and landscapes as metaphors for relationships and journeys, isolation and collaboration, playing with perspective in both the spiritual sense and the artistic. The color, light and juxtaposition of the figures in the landscape allow me to represent my perspective on life, on my journey, on where I am from, of how I am feeling and seeing the world at any particular time.

In the formal sense, the work is about color, light, perspective, and objects casting shadows in the picture plane. But metaphorically, the impetus is also one of perspective. How we affect one another, how our journey isolates us, brings us together, brings us to a precipice, jogs our memory, and fills us with hope or longing or melancholy.

The extreme shadows can be read as one individual's relationship with and affect upon another. The layering of the pastel is also a journey with layer upon layer of color, some dramatic, some soft and hazy, taking the piece on its own journey. The objects in these oil pastel drawings may stand alone in the picture plane but they strongly impact one another and tell stories or ask the viewer questions.

Atmospheric and evocative, the work is of time, memory, reminiscing, and contemplation. Some images are hopeful, some are wistful. The viewer enters one of my pieces alone, experiencing the space that has been created on their own. A moment just for them. These seemingly simple or straight forward images carry narrative and emotion. They raise questions about finding our place, what makes it our place, what is home, community? How do we get there, stay there, leave there?

These images are my take on the experiences and feelings I've had. The hope is that they resonate with you.
